Psalm 58
1-5: Accusations against the Wicked
6-9: Plea to God for Retributive Justice
10-11: The Outcome of God’s Justice
In this psalm, David calls out the unrighteousness and injustice perpetrated by the wicked. He describes how their thoughts are unjust, their rulings make way for violence, and their hearts have shut out justice.
He then pleads with God to destroy and eliminate them from the earth, so that they are not remembered. Finally, he closes with a declaration of God’s justice by those who observe the destruction of the wicked.
David acts as God’s prosecutor in this psalm, indicting the rulers and asking God the Judge to punish them harshly so everyone will know that there is a God who judges on the earth. Amen.
