Psalm 59

1-5: Prayer for Divine Rescue

6-9: The Pride of the Wicked

10-15: Prayer for Divine Judgment

16-17: Songs of Praise to God

This psalm of David is a prayer for divine rescue and divine judgment that also describes the prideful actions of his enemies. He closes with a commitment to praise the LORD with singing for being his refuge and source of strength.

David’s basis for pleading divine judgment against his enemies is the wickedness and injustice they commit, ambushing and attacking him for no guilt of his. They speak and act out of pride, believing no one can deliver out of their hands.

But the Almighty God laughs and scoffs at them, and David draws comfort and confidence from this knowledge, trusting that the execution of divine justice will remind everyone that there is a God who rules in Israel.
