Psalm 57

1-3: A Cry to God for Help

4-6: By a Man whose Soul is Endangered

7-11: And Who Keeps Praising God Anyway

Another cry for help while on the run from his enemy (King Saul), this psalm is particularly infused with praise throughout David’s pleas to God for help.

In verse 2, David praises God as the One who accomplishes all things for him. In verse 5, right in the middle of describing his precarious situation, he pauses to exalt and glorify God above the heavens and earth. Verses 7 to 11 close the psalm with more praise and exaltation of God.

David knows that his praise invokes God’s presence and response, so he praise God even in the process of asking for His help. David’s praise precedes the answers he desires, and that is how true faith operates. Amen.
