Psalm 77
1-6: Anguish – Musings of a Troubled Heart
7-10: Questions – Querying God’s Character
11-15: Meditation – Recalling God’s Wonders
16-20: Adoration – Describing God’s Ways in Nature
At the heart of this psalm is a set of five unanswered questions that crystallize Asaph’s struggle with God’s character amidst his troubles.
We watch Asaph pivot from restless recollections to wondrous worship through a commitment to deliberate meditation on God’s mighty works. Meditation leads to revelation.
As he thinks on God’s great works, his heart turns from troubled questions to assured convictions about God’s big picture plans for his people.
He may sometimes appear to persist in anger, but He is faithfully working through all things to lead His people into His purpose, even when we have unanswered questions. Amen!
