Psalm 69

1-12: Lament over distress and dishonour 

13–19: Prayer for rescue and redemption

20-21: More lamentation

22-28: Prayer for judgment of enemies

29-33: Pain, prayer, and praise

34-36: Praise to God who saves His people

This Davidic psalm of lament is well known as a Messianic psalm because of verses such as verse 9, 21, and 25, quoted in the Gospels and Acts.

It outlines David’s predicament in poetic images as he alternates between lamenting and praying, asking God for deliverance from distress and rescue from his enemies. 

He also prays for God’s judgment upon his enemies. David’s pain foreshadows the zeal and suffering of the Messiah and the subsequent redemption of that suffering. 

This psalm is a great comfort for every believer that we can praise God even in suffering because He redeems us in spite of our foolishness and guilt (see vs 5). Amen!
