Psalm 60

1-5: God’s rejection of His people

6-8: God’s victorious declaration over the nations

9-12: David’s plea for divine help to win in battle

Although this psalm is written by David, it includes a section containing God’s own words – His declaration over the nations.

First, David laments God’s rejection of His people and its consequence for them and their land. But he includes a reminder of God’s faithfulness to those who fear Him.

In the second section, David records God’s declaration of victory over Israel and its surrounding nations – He affirms Himself as Lord over all nations.

Finally, David asks for God’s help in battle (specifically against Edom) affirming that human help is worthless and divine help was all he needed for victory.

This psalm reveals how David grapples with defeat while maintaining and cultivating his faith in God. God’s faithful love remains unchanged no matter what we can go through, and we can always bring our pain and prayers to Him no matter what.
