Psalm 53

This short Davidic psalm reflects on the human condition upon denial of God’s existence. The outcome is a corrupt heart capable of abominable injustices. 

The psalm also highlights the universality of sin in the human heart. No one can claim original goodness with a perfect motive; even our best works are tainted with pride and self-centredness.

The second half of the psalm details the wickedness of those who deny God and the fear that comes upon them as part of divine judgement. The psalm ends with a prayer for divine salvation and restoration for Israel.

P.S: Quite a few of David’s psalms feature a spontaneous closing prayer for the city of Zion and the nation of Israel as God’s covenant people. (Psalms 25:22, 28:9, 51:18, 53:6)
