Psalm 47

1-4: Praise to the LORD, King over the Earth

5-9: Praise to the victorious reigning King

This short psalm calls for multi-faceted praise to the LORD, who is king over the earth. It calls for clapping, shouting with joy, and singing His praises.

God is both Lord over all the earth and King of His people. He watches over the whole earth but takes special interest in His people, bringing them into the inheritance He has promised them and sharing with them the spoils of His victory.

This psalm also pictures God ascending with a shout, at the sound of a trumpet, signifying the importance of music in invoking the LORD’s mighty presence.

The last verse reiterates His ultimate place in ruling over the affairs of the earth. Amen
