A Journey Through Psalms (8)

Psalm 8

If we had to choose one word to describe this psalm of David, the word would be “glory”. First, David examines the glory of the LORD, and then he reflects on the glory bestowed by the LORD on man before closing with a line of praise for His majestic name. Such a beautiful psalm!

1-2 God’s Glory

The LORD’s majesty is revealed through His creation (the heavens and the earth), but also through unlikely vessels like infants and nursing babies. Anyone can do great things through strength. Only True Majesty can do great things through weak vessels.

3-8 Man’s Glory

Although man is puny compared to the created universe, he receives the LORD’s undivided care and attention and has been positioned under God to rule over all of creation, on land, in the air, and in the sea. Again, only a majestic God uses a weak vessel such as man to rule such great realms.

9 God’s Glory

The psalm fittingly ends again with an exclamation about how majestic the LORD’s name is in all of the earth.

May our hearts ever dwell on the greatness of the LORD’s majesty as revealed all around us every day.
