Psalm 71

1-6: Save me, LORD, for you are my hope

7-11: Do not abandon me even in old age

12-16: Help me, God, and I will praise You

17-21: Sustain me, so I may testify of You

22-24: I will sing Your praises all day long!

This psalm focuses on the author’s plea to God for help and desire to remain a witness to God’s faithful character all through life.

The unnamed psalmist is aging and in trouble. Having trusted in and seen the goodness of God in his younger years, he now pleads for help and deliverance from God so he can testify to present and future generations about God’s works. And while waiting for God, he praises Him more and more (vs 14).

Taught of God, familiar with his attributes, and having seen His works in the past, the psalmist is committed to continual praise while earnestly praying and patiently waiting on the Lord for rescue and deliverance from his enemies.

It is a psalm of trust, praise, and plea all rolled into an earnest desire to praise God’s name to all generations. Amen!
