Psalm 55
1-3: Hear my prayer, oh God
4-8: For my heart is troubled and distressed
9-11: Confuse and divide wicked oppressors
12–15: Destroy the false and evil friend
16-21: I will call and be heard
- 16-19: By the LORD who redeems me
- 20-21: From the treachery of man
22-23: Call on God, and He will help you!
This psalm of David is the desperate prayer of a man under attack from treacherous friends. His overwhelming emotions and desire to run far away are very relatable to anyone in trouble.
He calls for confusion in the camp of the wicked, describing them as evil betrayers who mask their true motives with deceptive words. He then confidently asserts that the unchanging God will hear and deliver him.
The psalm closes with an admonition for the reader to “cast your burden upon the LORD”. He always hears, always delivers, and always keeps the righteous unshaken while justly judging the wicked. Amen!
