Psalm 51

This is David’s famous psalm of repentance after the prophet Nathan confronted him about his sins of adultery with Bathsheba & murder of Uriah, her husband.

1-4: Plea for pardon from sinful actions

5-9: Plea for cleansing from sinful nature

10-13: Prayer for renewal and restoration

14-17: Prayer for salvation out of contrition 

18-19: A final request for divine favour 

David appeals to God’s faithfulness and compassion as he journeys from admitting his specific sins to acknowledging his overall sinful nature. He asks God to purge him and wipe off his sinful records.

He then pleads for a new, faithful nature so that he can walk with God and subsequently teach sinners to do the same. He also asks for deliverance from guilt so that he can joyfully sing God’s praise without hesitation.

David knows the real sacrifice God desires is a broken and contrite heart. So he focuses on humbling himself before God, not offering animal sacrifices. The psalm closes with a prayer for God’s goodness towards Zion.

This psalm models true repentance for us and encourages us to draw near to God, knowing he is faithful and merciful to forgive and renew us. The power to change comes from God’s Spirit, not from ourselves. But first, we must humbly acknowledge our wrongdoing and need for His help.
