Psalm 41
The book of Psalms is divided into 5 books – this psalm is the last psalm in Book 1. David reflects on his experience with false friends and enemies while on his sick bed, prefacing it with the LORD’s kindness to helpers of the helpless, and closing it with a prayer for divine restoration. The final verse closes Book 1 of the psalms with praise to the LORD.
1-3: The LORD Rewards Helpers of the Helpless
4-9: The Menace of False Friends and Enemies while in Sickness
10-12: A Prayer for Divine Restoration
13: Praise the LORD, the God of Israel
This psalm begins with instructions about kindness to the helpless. The LORD watches out for the vulnerable and oppressed, and He rewards their helpers with salvation, protection, and restoration from sickness.
He then reflects on his own sickness and his ordeal with false friends and enemies who speak evil of him and plot his harm while he is sick. He especially laments the betrayal of false friends who had eaten with him.
Finally, he turns his eyes heavenward as he prays for deliverance and restoration. His help is only in the LORD. The psalm (and Book 1 of Psalms) ends with a chant to YHWH, the everlasting God of Israel.
