Psalm 29
This Davidic psalm extols the LORD’s power, majesty, and glory by revealing that He is more powerful than the things that terrify humanity – mighty beings, floods, mountains, fires, and more.
1-2: Call to Glorify the LORD
3-9: Describing the Majesty of His Voice
10-11: Declaring His Sovereign Rulership
This psalm of exaltation begins with a call for the “mighty ones” – a likely reference to heavenly angelic beings – to give glory to the LORD because He is worthy.
The psalmist then proceeds to describe the wondrous works accomplished by the LORD’s voice – it does the impossible and inspires fear in things that terrify humanity. Everything in creation and nature is brought forth and sustained by His Word, at the sound of His voice. His voice rumbles and causes the earth to become uneasy and to tremble. He is a fearful and awesome God.
The psalmist concludes by declaring the LORD’s enthronement over the flood – that dangerous and terrible mass of waters that cover the earth. He rules over it all while blessing His people with strength and peace.
The LORD is exalted and majestic all by Himself. No one compares to Him!
