Psalm 24
This Davidic psalm is a song about Zion, the chosen city of YHWH, the King of Glory. Its first part examines what sort of person may access God’s holy city. Its second part describes the entry of the Glorious King himself into the city.
1-6: Entering the LORD’s Holy Hill
Although the earth and all it contains (living creatures and non-living features) belong to the LORD, He has set apart a hill where He “dwells”, in His temple. Those who would seek Him there must set themselves apart in their actions, thoughts, attitudes, and words. And those who do seek and find Him will receive a blessing from Him – the precious gift of righteousness. The first and greatest blessing of knowing the LORD is salvation
7-10: Entry of the Glorious King
David now charges the gates to open up for the arrival of the King to whom the city has been set apart. The entry of the Glorious King is on the basis of His Name. The Name of the LORD opens up ancient doors. The gates may query his identity, but at the invocation of His name and the description of His majesty, they are thrown wide open to let Him in.
David is zealous about Zion’s consecration as the LORD’s eternal dwelling place, and he is eager to welcome Him in to rule from Zion. For us, this is a reminder of two things. One, the LORD’s presence is hallowed, and hosting Him requires commitment to separation. Two, the LORD is mighty and powerful, and every door will at last open up to let Him in.
