Psalm 21

This is a psalm of praise to the LORD for past deliverance, present blessings, and future victories.

1-6: Praise to the LORD for divine blessings

The first half of this psalm is a celebratory declaration of God’s many blessings upon the king (David), including answered prayers, material blessings, long life, joy, and so on. It is a reminder to us to testify about the LORD’s goodness, and to be specific in naming our blessings.

7-13: Trust in the LORD for future victories

The second half of the psalm confidently declares trust in the LORD for future deliverance from and destruction of the king’s enemies. Because David has aligned himself with the LORD, his enemies are now God’s enemies and are subject to His wrath. And so he closes the psalm with praise for the LORD’s strength.

The LORD’s faithful protection carries forward from our past through the present into our future.
