A Journey Through Psalms (6)

Psalm 6

1-3

David opens this psalm with a pleas of tenderness and grace, knowing the intensity of the wrath of the LORD, and recognizing his own failings. He pleads for healing and awaits a divine visitation, knowing his travails are the result of his wrongdoings.

The wise earnestly seek first the LORD’s mercy.

4-5

His plea for divine rescue is anchored both on God’s tender mercies and his own commitment to give thanks to the LORD. In others words, “LORD save me because I can only praise You while I am alive.”

6-7

David paints his trials in vivid images – sighs, furnitures flooded with tears, and eyes wasted with grief are his daily experiences. Being honest with God about our emotions is a critical part of prayer.

8-10

He rebukes and distances himself from evildoers because he knows his prayers have been heard by the LORD. He then closes by describing the sudden shame and dismay of his enemies when his deliverance arrives. Faith is reflected in the actions we take and words we speak. Without such works, faith is dead.
