A Journey Through Psalms (2)

Psalm 2

This psalm reads like a play with a narrator observing and switching between scenes.

In Scene 1 (verses 1 to 3), he observes rage and conspiracy among people and their rulers against the LORD and His Anointed.

In Scene 2 (verses 4 to 6), he observes the Lord’s response (laughter) and foretells his reaction (His terror and His declaration)

In Scene 3 (verses 7 to 9), the narrator proclaims the LORD’s decree to Himself, granting sonship, inheritance, and authority.

In the final scene (verses 10 to 12), he goes back to the opening scene to warn the rulers to submit in reverence to the Son and serve Him to avoid being destroyed by His wrath.

We know from the New Testament that this psalm is about the Messiah (the Son, the Anointed One), and His heavenly mandate to rule and possess the earth in coming days.

It is however, also instructive to us about how to respond to conspiracies – by knowing our God, knowing who we are in relation to Him, and speaking according to that knowledge.

Blessed is everyone who takes refuge, not in their own ability, but in the Son of God!
