Psalm 1
This poem or song is a tale of two kinds of people – the righteous and the wicked.
The first part speaks about the righteous, highlights their do’s and don’ts, and pictures them as fruitful well-watered trees. They prosper in all they do. Worthy of note are the verbs ‘walk’, ‘stand’, ‘sit’, which reflect their conscious choice to reject evil company. They also take pleasure in getting to know and understand God’s Law.
The second part contrasts the prosperity of the righteous with the instability of the wicked – these ones are driven by the wind like chaff. Their lives will not hold up under cross-examination and their way will perish. They have no weight or solid foundation and all it takes for them to be uprooted is one gust of strong wind.
The psalm concludes with a reminder that the LORD (YHWH) watches over the steps of the righteous to protect them, while He overlooks the wicked and leaves them to destruction.
