Psalm 43

This psalm is a short prayer to be delivered from the enemy and be guided into the presence of God. It concludes with the psalmist encouraging his own soul.

1-2: Deliverance from an ungodly enemy

3-4: Divine guidance into God’s presence

5: Encouragement for a restless soul

The psalmist pleads, first for deliverance from oppression by his enemies, and then for a release of divine virtues that would lead him to God’s presence so he could praise and worship Him.

The psalmist then asks God to send His light (illumination, brightness) and His truth (assurance, faithfulness) to lead him to His holy hill. We need clarity and a sure footing to find our way to God.

The prayers in this psalm are two sides of a coin – one to be delivered from oppressive evil, and the other to be brought into God’s joyful presence.

The psalmist concludes with a self-query about the despair and restlessness of his soul, and a reassurance that God’s help will come as he continues to wait for Him. Amen.
