Psalm 35
This psalm is a passionate prayer of David for rescue from his enemies on the basis of divine justice. He pleads his case before God, asking repeatedly for deliverance for himself and destruction for his enemies.
1-3: Plea for divine help and reassurance
4-10: Prayer for destruction of enemies
- 4-8: Shame, darkness, and instability as rewards for wickedness
- 9-10: Joyful song by the righteous upon divine rescue
11-16: The wicked repay good with evil
17-21: Prayer for rescue from death and shame
22-28: A final appeal for divine justice
- 22-25: Submission and closing arguments to the judge
- 26-28: Plea for vindication and commitment to praise
This psalm is full of vivid imagery describing David’s plight as well as his desire for his enemies. Although he clearly wants his enemies destroyed, it is not merely on the basis of personal grievance but on the principle of divine justice.
In his closing arguments, he calls on the LORD to look on his appeal and act according to His own righteousness. Like David, we can be honest with God about our desires, but our prayers must ultimately be subject to His sovereign will and revealed character. He is the Just Judge over all.
