Psalm 26
This Davidic psalm is a prayer for vindication and preservation from the destruction that is due only to the wicked.
1-7: A Prayer for Vindication
- 1-2: Examine my heart
- 3-7: I have kept my hands clean
8-12: A Prayer for Preservation
- 8: I love your presence
- 9-10: Save me from death
- 11-12: I will keep my paths level
The psalmist knows that he is committed to pleasing the LORD and doing good works, so he takes his case to the LORD and makes an appeal to be kept from death and destruction.
He presents as evidence his past works as well as his future commitment to praising the LORD. His abstinence from evil is interspersed with his love for the Lord and contrasted with the violence and deception of the wicked.
This psalm is a reminder that the LORD is a righteous Judge before whom we can plead our case. For New Testament believers, our plea is only to the blood of the Son, whose perfect life paid for our sins and justifies us before the Almighty God. Amen.
