Psalm 4
Vs 1: David opens this psalm with a testimony of past deliverance sandwiched between two requests to be heard by God. We hear his faith in God amidst his supplication.
Vs 2-3: The next two verses are a warning to his enemies not to slander him out of their unbelief. He reminds them that the LORD does hear his prayers. Unbelief often produces wicked behaviour towards others, especially towards those who fear God.
Vs 4-5: Whether a counsel to himself or others, these verses call for careful examination of one’s way before acting, in order to avoid sin. They also call for sacrifices that are pleasing to God through faith in Him. Faith in God must lead to a lifestyle of purity and sacrifices.
Vs 6-8: The last two verses of this psalm see David look inward to reassure himself while waiting for his prayers to be answered and enduring the mockery of the wicked. This assurance manifests as a divine joy that is greater than a joy inspired by natural prosperity. We can rest peacefully in our sleep when we trust in the Lord’s protection.
